Q. What is the name of the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) system used at Cochrane Woods Library?
A. Our online catalog is called WebCat.
Q. How are books shelved in the library? A. The books, except for those in the curriculum lab area, are
classified according to the Library of Congress classification system, and are shelved according to the LC call numbers
assigned to each book. The call numbers are a combination of letters and numbers, such as:

Q. What are the library's borrowing policies? A. See: Circulation policies

. Does the library keep reserve materials for classes? A. Yes. Library materials, and personal copies of books and articles provided by professors, can be put on reserve
for classes. These materials are kept at the circulation desk.
Q. Does the library charge overdue fines? A. Students are charged overdue fines. See Student circulation policies.
Q. How do I return library materials? A. Books may be returned at the inside bookdrop near the
circulation counter during library hours. When the library is closed, you may use the outside bookdrop located near the entrance.
Important!! Videotapes, records, CDs, and other AV materials and breakable items must be returned to the circulation department to avoid damage.

Can reserve materials be checked out, and if so, for how long? A. Yes, you may check out reserve items at the circulation desk.
Most items check out for 2 hours. Some check out for 1 day, or 1 week, depending on the needs of the class

Are journals/periodicals/magazines listed WebCat? A. Yes, most serials are listed in the online catalog. You should
also check the blue, spiral bound books titled Journal Holdings in Cochrane-Woods Library. You will find these near the WebCat terminals.
Q. How can I locate journals/periodicals/magazines in the library? A. Journals/periodicals/magazines are shelved
alphabetically by title on the second floor. Current issues are shelved in middle section of the second floor; back
issues are bound and shelved in the stacks.
Q. Can journals/periodicals/magazines be checked out?
A. No, but you may make photocopies of the articles that you need.
Q. Where are the photocopy machines?
A. There are two coin-operated photocopiers in the library. One is located on the first floor, in the reference area near
the water fountain. The other is in the south corner of the second floor. Copies cost $.05 each. The copiers make
change for $1.00 and $5.00 bills as well.
Q. Where are newspapers located? A. Daily newspapers are kept on the 2nd floor.

Are there any newspapers on microfilm? A. Yes, the back issues of the Christian Science Monitor, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal are
available on microfilm.
Q. Where is the microfilm collection located? A. The microfilm collection is located in the north corner of
the second floor.
Q. Can photocopies be made from microfilms? A. Yes. Copies can be made at the circulation desk for $.10
each. Request forms are available near the microfilm collection area and at the circulation desk.
Q. Are their videotapes in our collection?
Can they be checked out? A. Yes , and yes. The video collection is located near the circulation desk. For students, video tapes check out overnight only.
Q. Where can I view videotapes in the library? A . Room 305 and Room 306 are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Where are reference materials? Can they be checked out? A . The reference collection is located on the first floor. All
reference books are labelled "Ref" in their call numbers. Reference materials in general cannot be checked out.

Can we access the catalogs of other libraries? A. Yes, links to other libraries are available on the NWU library website.
Q. What is the name of UNL's online catalog? Can we access
that catalog? A. The UNL catalog is called IRIS and can be accessed via the web.
Q. Can Wesleyan students check out books from the UNL libraries?
A. Yes. Present your NWU ID card at the UNL main library (Love Library) and receive a UNL library card. This card
allows you to check out materials from Love library, C.Y. Thompson library, and the departmental libraries at UNL.

How can I get materials that are not locally available? A. Cochrane-Woods Library provides an interlibrary loan service to NWU students, faculty, and staff. ILL request
forms are available at the Reference Desk or near the WebCat computers.
Q. Are there computers in the library for student use?
A. Yes, the Microcomputer Resource Learning Center (MRLC) is located on the ground floor of the library. HP and Mac computers in the MRLC can be used by students
during library hours if these labs are not reserved for classes.
Q. What are the opening hours of the MRLC? A. The computer labs are open when the library is open.

. Is there a phone in the library for patron use? A. Yes, a phone is available on the third floor near the study area.

Is there a typewriter available for patron use? A. Yes, a typewriter is located outside Room 309 on the third floor.
