Available Library Services
Spring 2004

Our updated Borrowing Policies are now available in PDF format

This is an overview of Cochrane Woods Library's services and policies. Please follow the links included below for more specific information.

Access to Library Collections

Patrons can locate books and other materials (including non-print) through WebCat, our online catalog. NWU shares its catalog with nine other academic institutions, as part of the Nebraska Independent College Libraries Consortium (or NICLC).

Any computer with Internet access and a web browser such as Mozilla, Netscape, or Internet Explorer can access our catalog at any time. The library has WebCat terminals available on each floor of the library; these are PCs that do not require users to log into the campus network.

Library collections in Cochrane Woods go far beyond what is available in the online catalog. There are a variety of databases that allow users to find articles and other materials, as well as links to other libraries and collections. All databases are available to NWU patrons via our proxy server. Merely enter your network login and password when prompted, if you are searching from off-campus locations.

Checking out Materials

Patrons must have an officially issued NWU ID card in order to check out materials from the library. Patrons with IDs from other institutions that have set up reciprocal borrowing agreements with NWU, or Lincoln residents who have obtained NWU courtesy cards may check out circulating books from the library. The checkout period varies depending on the materials. Please see our borrowing policies for additional information, or call 465-2400.

Database searching assistance

Various research databases are available at Cochrane Woods, including products from EBSCO and FirstSearch. For one-on-one assistance with using any database to which we subscribe, please contact Reference Librarian Lindsay Brownfield, call 465-2407, or visit the Reference Desk.

Interlibrary Loan

Materials not available at our library can be obtained for NWU patrons from other libraries. This service is called "Interlibrary Loan," and is provided only to NWU students, faculty, and staff.

Please use the online interlibrary loan forms to place your requests. While our library does not charge fees for this service, some lending libraries will charge us to cover the costs of photocopying and shipping. Patrons will be notified ahead of time if there are any such fees. Interlibrary loans provided by our NICLC consortium member institutions are free of charge.

Library Instruction

Various library instruction classes are offered during the regular terms to first-year, transfer, and international students as well as upper class and graduate students. These classes are available to students in both the College of Liberal Arts and University College. Contact Reference Librarian Lindsay Brownfield (or at 465-2407) or one of the other professional librarians to make arrangements.

Media Services

Audiovisual materials and equipment, such as videotapes, DVDs, slide/film projectors, overhead projectors, VCRs and camcorders can be checked out to NWU patrons. Films, videos, and DVDs may be available from other libraries for classroom use. Please contact Katie Dunham (or call 465-2400) for more information.

Photocopy Machines

Two coin-operated copy machines are available for patron use. One is located on the first floor in the reference area. The other is located on the second floor near the current periodicals. Copies cost 5 cents each; both machines will accept $1 and $5 bills.

Patrons may purchase transparencies for 30 cents each at the circulation desk for use in the copy machines. PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY OTHER TYPE OF TRANSPARENCY IN LIBRARY COPIERS. Cheap transparencies will melt in the machines and destroy the equipment.

Reference Materials on CD-ROM

Reference materials in CD-ROM format can be checked out for 'In Library Use' only. These CD-ROMs may be used in the Mac or PC labs, as well as the 'stand alone' PC located near the reference desk. Please ask at the Reference Desk for assistance.

Reference Service and Assistance

Please see the Reference Desk for assistance in beginning or carrying out your research. Help is available for all types of research and reference needs. Patrons may also call 465-2407 or 2406 for help.

Reserve Materials

The library will place any materials on reserve for classes upon the request of the instructor. Please see our information for students and for faculty; call 465-2400 for assistance with reserve materials.

The information contained here is simply and overview, and may change as circumstances warrant. Please call 465-2400 with questions or concerns.
